VirtuaLens is an immersive virtual reality experience designed to help cataract patients better understand their intraocular lens, or IOL, options before surgery.
During cataract surgery, the eye’s cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called an IOL. There are several types of IOLs available, and each can provide different visual benefits depending on your vision needs and lifestyle.
With VirtuaLens, you can use a virtual reality headset to experience simulations of how different lens options may affect your vision in realistic, everyday settings.

VirtuaLens allows you to experience different lenses visually.
The technology can simulate several IOL options, including monofocal, multifocal, toric, extended depth of focus (EDoF), light adjustable lenses and monovision.
You can experience lens simulations in familiar settings and activities, such as:

- Spending time in the kitchen
- Golfing
- Relaxing at home

How Does VirtuaLens Work?
The VirtuaLens experience is simple and designed to complement your cataract consultation.
First, you’ll meet with your doctor to discuss your eye health, vision goals and lifestyle. Based on these factors, your doctor will recommend the lens options that may be appropriate for you.
Next, you’ll meet with your surgical coordinator and use the VirtuaLens headset to experience simulations of the lens options recommended by your doctor. This gives you an opportunity to visualize how those lenses may affect your vision during everyday activities.
VirtuaLens is an educational tool and does not guarantee or predict your exact vision after cataract surgery. Instead, it provides another way to better understand your doctor’s recommendations and your lens options before surgery.
